    Here is an interesting visor.

It has bullion and metal insignia. It looks like an infantry cap, but the piping seems to have been dyed green. Grenadier?
I have heard that they did this if and when new stock was not available, but it could also have been done more recently.

Still a neat cap with character and a nice saddle shape...............

It is a nice cap and I really like it.

Regarding the dyed waffenfarbe piping. We can only specualte. Personally, I think it could be a period modification. My reasoning is this. The colour is now green for the Panzer Grenadier arm. As the piping was previously white for the Infanterie, there is a very good chance that the owners unit was later mechanised as the war progressed. A thrifty officer may well have dyed the piping in order to save buying a new cap. Although it could be done by a "faker", I think there would be better ( from a conman's resale point of view) colours to choose, such as Panzer pink, or some of the rarer ones like smoke troops burgundy red, etc.

I have an Heer Officers Feldmutze Alter Art in my collection which I have owned for over 30 years. The piping on this has been converted to Pz Gren green.

    Cheers, Ade.

Could be, but I agree with Ade. Perhaps I'm just a romanticist. I recon no one
on either side had a lot of dough. Officers included. Too bad "Fr Sch" didn't
complete his full name inside the cap.................

Speaking of thrift, just look at some of the WWI Imperial medals and
medal bars, and many coins and medals made from zinc during both world wars
from various countries to cut costs.

Imagine the total amount of sterling silver required to make 6,500,000 WWI
    British War Medals ! ? !

If you could post a decent macro photo of the piping, that would answer a lot of questions.

Here are some close ups of the piping.....

Could be mold or dust in the crevasses.

I like the wear. I still think this was done a long time ago and saw wear after it was dyed.

Yes - I've owned it for quite some time now ( But you wouldn't like it
that much Mo - Lol, it is rather small - 62 ) I had to have it because
of it's wonderful 'saddle shape' which I love, but this doesn't really
show in the photos. The only marking is on the sweatband:
    'Deutches Leder'.

Are you searching for a cap to match your new tunic ?

A couple more shots I took this morning.........
