Sorry if this is an obvious question but why did some Schirmmutze have the springs removed for wear?

I have seen an original period cartoon of a German soldier going to a tailor to buy a new private purchase schirmutze. He walks out of the store, rips outs the cap spring and then jumps up and down on it before proudly putting it on his head.
