Sometimes the black velvet fades to brown depending on heat/age...

Here is another one--this is a Weimar postman's hat, and the velvet originally was a dark blue. Like the red-top, this one has also faded to brown:

as stated above the all colours fade depends on age and use/misuse you will notice in the centre where badge/cockade is is where it is darkest because that is where less "grubby" hands touch it
