I should imagine that said marks were hardly limited to the Lubstein brand?

So if the Roman numeral size marking does not correspond with the cap size exactly it is a sign that the lining has been tempered with?

I guess, but you have to measure the cap with one of the contemporary devices to be utterly sure as to size. However, a re made cap has many incriminating traits, surely. That is, if the hand written mark and the actual size of the cap diverge, and otherwise the cap is fine, I am less prone to worry.

Yes, indeed. Or someone today cannot measure the size of the cap properly. Who knows? So much of this is a hall of mirrors, especially with the Marke Lubstein.

If you read the primary sources on all the flaws, errors, omissions, and challenges of the trade, you will be less prone to believe the gun show canards and old saws that make the rounds and cleave hardly to the truth as it unfolded.

Absolutely, they can be found on numerous other brands too.

In so far as the size marking not matching the actual size of the cap, surely there where stacks of die cut lining panels ready to installed and already size marked. More than possible that the odd mistake was made now and again.
