Thumbs up re: SS Officer's Grey Schirmmütze

This is a GOOD one, the insignias are also ok.
the eagle is a m1/167 Augustin Hicke, the skull is a Assmann with Ges.Gesch. on the back.
    well done boy

This is a real wartime cap. Whamond on the collector's guild had a similar one for sale recently. This insignia is typical of such caps. The Assmann skull is unloved, but this is an authentic one with typical zinc damage that fits with the whole thing. A very rare piece, with more than average signs of the passage of time, but still authentic. I especially like the wool of the cap cover and its particular shade of field grey, despite the damage. I am sure that a skilled hand could repair some of the worst of the damage. Well done. This is the face of authentic history, and also a good corrective to the mania for the "minty" that is so irritating, really. You also see here to good effect the grey variant of such cap linings, too. If these things were as common as army caps, I suppose one could turn up one's nose at the damage, but these things are hard to find and more sought now by many than was the case five years ago.

The price of the cap reflects its condition. Grey SS caps are rare, and I wrote elsewhere that they tend to be beat up. This piece is further evidence of my generalization. But, once more, it is real, unlike the many, many poseurs and pretenders.

The only serious way to determine if a cap is remade is to examine it closely. From a coup d'oeil, however little it is worth, I would wager that Mr. Stiles' cap here is authentic. What I wrote above is an impression, but I hope an informed one. One can waste a huge amount of time with salvos of doubt and reproach. The real material in the internet tends to accumulate in a few, select places.

One might make a constructive statement to the effect that here are certain traits of caps that have been remade.
