I do apologize for my pre judgment of your pith helmet!
Far from an expert, and clearly late to the party, I like this one. The cork and wicker pith helmets varied a lot more in shape than the pressed felt ones did. In the case of these helmets, shape isn't always a determining factor. I also understand there has been little evidence that the felt versions were ever used on the African front, which for my tastes makes the posted type more appealing.
For the two+ years that the Afrika Korps were active I see no reason non- standard sun helmets could not have been employed. They were attempting to avoid sun stroke, and supply lines were stretched ( even uniforms )
Functionality was more important !!
