That is a very interesting thought. The kepi is traditionally French I believe. The NSDAP introduced many new fads to Germany, so I guess this is just another example of that.
Much of Nazi uniform was based on Austrian, i.e. K u K Armee antecedents, the kepi was widely used also in the Austro Hungarian army as were the rank insignia etc.

A very interesting and rare political leader uniform with first pattern NSDAP insignia and the striped kampfbinde. These are rarely seen. An interesting kepi with a similar visor.
Very nice Montur.

Shea had a kepi of this type for awhile.
I have also seen SS kepis with a leather peak, as well.
