I have examined this cap in detail. The piping appeared to be a rayon core wrapped in cotton. In certain spots it had separated from the cap, and had been rather crudely reattached. In addition, certain sections of the piping had somewhat hardened; I agree that moisture has played a part in the history of this cap...
