Neat looking hat, BUT in 65+ years of collecting I've never heard of such a hat.
IF very cheap I'd buy it as a fake oddity just because if is kinda neat.
Sarge
sure I saw one in a photo on the ost front.
I like it.

Me too, I'll see if I can find the pic.

Ps Why would anybody fake something so unusual? If it is a propers item perhaps an inservice mod by unit tailors or an actually issued version the value would be in the rarity.
Just to fake a single item would not be econimically viable (unless it is something like Hitlers underpants) so to make profit it would have to be made in quantity and we would see more?

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
All sorts of irregular/modified items were used on the Russian front; anything to help stay alive.
I think my only caveat would be if this is Swedish or similar hat , doctored with period insignia . I agree it wouldn't be worth faking from scratch , but Lipstick on a Pig ?
I have seen padded and quilted caps that don't fit the mold. I like this one too. Really, too odd to be a fake cap and the cloth does not look Swedish to me. NH
I've got a padded side cap bit of mouth damage got the name hass and a stamp inside with a crown I .14 1940 above that is for with 2 dots above the o 55 o.56
