Hello and welcome to the forum.
First time I see such a badge!
Did you know wich country he served in?
And is there any chance to see the back side of the badge?

I'm not even sure if it is the second world war....I cant seem to find anythign out about it. The engraving on the back is Thomas Pateroni, Regent Street, Birmingham. I have contacted them and they dont know what it is either.

Welcome, how long have you known about it? For instance, did you know your Grandfather had it ten, twenty, thirty years ago?

The symbolism of the four circles on the shield might be astrolological/astronomical.

The circle divided in four (top left) is used as a symbol for the Earth, the circle with a dot in the middle (top right) as a symbol for the sun, the plain circle (bottom left) as a symbol for a full moon. The horizontally divided circle, I don't know.

Of course, these are such simple, basic symbols that this could be a coincidence and they actually stand for something completely different here. Just a thought.

Masonic, it just has to be. My work landlord is in fact a GM.
    I will ask him.

I thought Masonic rather than military but the badge looks quite modern........
