I have a small table laid out with a swastika flag and the photos of my two great uncles. The way I see it, at that time, the Swastika was their national flag and I am very proud of both of them. I know the swastika has many negative conotations, but my experience in Iraq, where the Australian flag was openly burned and defaced, the Iraqi's see my national flag as a flag of occupation but that doesn't make me any less proud of it. I am not "proud" of the swastika flag, but it was the flag of the German nation at the time and the flag that they both fought and died under. I have had tradesmen etc come into my house and see it, I had one bloke who was Jewish and asked me how I could display it, I explained my veiw, and I respected the fact it can be offensive, but I am not about to "hide" it in my own home. He also took offence to my 6ft 2 manequin in German uniform, but like I said, it's not something I am going to cover up or move just in case it offedns someone who comes into my home.

On the plus side, a lot of people are fascinated by what I have and most have never seen the likes before, so I find it educational as well

i agree with you so much, it was just a national symbol nothing more or less, but the way had made it portrayed has given a bad reputation to it. i once showed some one one of my visor eagles and they said " oh, a swatzika" " do u like nazis?" this is where i like to give people a history lesson telling them i respect the organization of the third reich rather than their policy and dont and will never agree what they did in the holocaust. and to keep an open mind next time they see a swatzika

The way I explain the whole "Nazi" thing is that a "Nazi" was a member of the National Socialist party, there were thousands of members and not evryone of them would have agreed to all Hitlers policies, at the time it was advantagous to be a member, It would have been like me being a Soldier and joining the Labour party as a member, not everyone likes the Labour party, nor do I agree with all their policies. Just because I was a serviceman under a Labour govt, doesn't make me a "Labourist". Servciemen don't necesarily get to choose what govt they serve under, we can all vote, but you gotta still do your job no matter who is in Government.

My own take on this is that its, "my house, my room, my collection/s and if you have a problem with it, you know where the door is!"

There were/are enough family members alive or dead who wear/have worn the uniform of my country, they donot have a problem with my hobby, so why should I? BTW, it was my late grandfather who got me into military history and militaria in general. He was also one of the first allied soldiers into (?)Buchenwaldt so saw the camps "first hand" and knew what certain elements were like during the 3rd Reich Period.

As an aside, the swastika was originally a RELIGIOUS symbol, the nazi's just hi-jacked it, reversed it and used it for their own device!!

I keep all my stuff hidden away for two reasons. I would feel uncomfortable about what my friends and visitors would think and also because there is no way on earth my wife would let me have any area of our house for displaying any kind of militaria !
