Israel Defense Forces - Combat Medals, 5733-1973

For more than 20 years there was opposition from the IDF to the awarding of medals. At the head of the opposition stood David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, who was content to distribute 12 badges "Hero of Israel" following the War of Independence, and to empower the Chief of Staff and IDF commanders to award "Merit Badges". The Knesset adopted the "Law of Awards" in 1970. The details regarding awards were set forth in 1973 and the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation issued the medals.

    Medal of Valour
Awarded by the Minister of Defense on the recommendation of the Chief of Staff for supreme acts of heroism in time of war, facing the enemy and at the risk of life.

    Medal of Courage
Awarded by the Chief of Staff for deeds of valour while on combat duty, at the risk of life.

    Distinguished Service Medal
Awarded by the Chief of Staff for deeds of courage.

    Police Medals, 5734-1974

The Mandatory police began to disband in the wake of the United Nations resolution recommending the division of Palestine. The Jewish policemen in the sea coast region stayed on duty but there was a shortage of commanders and technicians who could take the place of the British. However, within two years, available manpower was doubled and the needed equipment was ordered. In 1969, when police headquarters were transferred to Jerusalem, the police force had 11,134 men and women, including 1,050 Druse and Arabs. Four classes of medals are awarded by the Israeli Police.

    Medal of Valour
On a silver disc a stylized candelabra and the police emblem between two live branches. The ribbon is red and blue. The blue portion bears the police emblem.

    Medal of Courage
On a silver disc, a stylized candelabra within which there is an olive branch and the police emblem. The ribbon is blue with two thin red stripes.

    Distinguished Service Medal
On a silver disc, a stylized candelabra within which is an olive branch above the police emblem. The ribbon is blue with two thin white stripes.

    Service Medal
On a silver-nickel alloy disc, a portion of the police emblem. On the right an olive branch. The ribbon is blue with a thin white stripe.
