Another mismasch of markings: bottle L&LS38, cap and cover O.H.W.39, cup MN40. The inscription on the cup sais that it once belonged Unteroffizier Leyer.

They keep coming, this time all matching JSD 36. The sad fact is that someone has replaced original straps with the ones from some paramilitary canteen

Hi I am a new member on the forum

on our last deep dive expedition on the SS Achaia wreck in Libya,

we discovered a German army water bottle, as we lifted up and clean it, we found a code number on the cup.

the code is : ESB 40.

what could this code reference to?

    appreciates your comments….

    Thanks.

It's been quiet for some time, not even sure why. But last week I got beautyful complete medical canteen, which was found in another attic of my home town. Around the same time I also got two great cups, the paintless marked with RZM

The number 40 refers to the year of production, ESB is producer (Ed. Sommerfeld, Berlin).

I love the ground dug stuff, especially the drinking cups with heavy scars. One of them belonged originally to Estonian volunteer E. Varik

Today I got this remarkable piece of Estonian military history. It's the German canteen, probably left behind by German units during retreat from Sõrve/Sworbe peninsula (Saaremaa/Ösel) in november 1944. After that this canteen was picked up by some Estonian guy fighting on Soviet side. The guy has been serving in Sõrve from february to november 1945 and has engraved a poem on the bottle. In Estonian it's truly beatyful, with right rythm and rhymes, but as my English is quite primitive I can give you only the rough translation:

"...Now I travel in the wide world
    without home
and the tear of sadness shines in my eye
    when I think of you.

    Memory in Sõrve
    24 II- 10 XI 1945"

The bottle also has initials ET, which I suspect belong to it's original German (or another Estonian on German side) owner, because it's written in different style and manner.
