A combination mate !! Sending books out all the time would be very expensive so i send them stickers to sign as well as asking for signed photos , others were signed during personal visits or meetings !!

These five books were autographed to me by the authors, which makes them particularly valuable to me. The first up is a government publication, Makin, which is the last monograph in the War Department's American Forces in Action Series that was published immediately after the war. As an undergraduate I worked with Prof. George Moore, Ph.D. in gathering the personal papers of the retired general grade officers in the 6th Army area, then headquartered at the Presidio of San Francisco, and the 12th Naval District, headquartered at Mare island, Vallejo, California. Maj. Gen. Ralph C. Smith, CO of the 27th Infantry Div., gave me this book and signed it at the end of our lengthy interview in his Palo Alto home.

Charles Burdick, Ph.D., the best friend I ever had, gave this book and the one following, to me. Charles was one of America's leading authorities on modern German military history, and had met and become friends with many of the German general grade officers who survived the war and were living in West Germany. In Halder's case, Frau Halder provided Charles and his partner her late husband's war diary.

The next two books were given to me by authors to whom I had given assistance in researching their books. Most of the authors I have helped gave me a copy of the book when it came out, but these two went the extra way to sign them to me. I very much appreciate that.

I inherited these last two books when Charles died in 1998. He had provided Christopher R. Browning, Ph.D. with research leads, and the two became good friends. Charles and Erich Topp were also very good friends. The first book, Ordinary Men, is probably the best work on the police battalions and the Final Solution. Dwight
