A particular area of collecting interest for me is the Stalingrad campaign. I'd like to share this small document and award grouping to Georg Beer who was in Infanterie Regiment 260 of the 113. Infanterie Division. Georg was a very lucky guy. He was wounded on 22 January 1943 and had to be in one of the very last couple plane loads of wounded to be flown out of the pocket! Taken from Stalingrad.net: " After the loss of Pitomnik and Gumrak airfield in the Stalingrad pocket only the emergency airfield of Stalingradskaja (also written Stalingradski or Stalingradskiy), near the city center of Stalingrad, was left to use to provide the encircled forces. This small airfield (400 meter x 60 meter) was used only two days. 22 and 23 January 1943. " More at: Last flight out of the Stalingrad encirclement
It reports that on the very last plane there were 9 wounded on board. I wonder if Beer was one of those 9.
Georg not only miraculously survived Stalingrad, but also the entire war and served in the Fire Department in the Regensburg area after the war. His Bavarian Feuerwehr Ehrenzeichen in gold and silver came with the grouping.
