    G'Day Fellas,
    Does anyone have an idea what the hell this item may be.It was dug from a 19th century dump here in Australia.
    It has the arms of the Royal Regiment of Artillery hand painted on it.
    Its about 90mm long and 45mm in Circumference,made of Porcelain and hollow through the middle.
    Any Thoughts

    Salt/pepper shaker ? Desk set ornament ? Ink well ? Center portion
    of an old lamp ? Is there anything on the cap end ?

    Weird I know, but it looks like the porcelain/ceramic insulator off a telegraph pole. That beggars the question why??? I don't know.

    That is exactly what I was thinking but I don't know why it would be so elaborate. I have a couple of those from the late 19th century but they are not a work of art like this one.

    The reason why it was decorated, can be anything....

    Looking at it again, it can't be 19th century, it must be 20th because the regimental insignia has a kings crown and not a queens.

    Looks like 'trench art' made from something lying around-would be for an office, orderly room or mess-as posited above.
