you are right Mac 66 is scabbard is blued, And compared to a lot the of the painted ones I’ve seen It is in surprisingly good condition. My understanding is that some of the earlier ones were blued instead of painted?

Yes your correct, some early & Transitional period hj knifes had blued scabbards, there pretty hard to come by as most were painted enamel black , also you see scabbards that were blued origionally over painted black as the blueing wore away due to heavy use.
