Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Bump for a great thread. Not sure why, but I find it ultra cool that dagger, or even sword, could be official uniform at that late stage in history.
IIRC, none of the pics showed *both* a sword and dagger at the same time. I always assumed they complimented each other. Any insite one when they would opt for the longer? Did all who qualified for a dagger automatically get a sword also, or is the latter more for officers/NCO (or the equivalent, sorry for for not knowing correct German terms)?
It was an either or situation: both were never worn at the same time. Indeed, many organisations never had swords.
Very broadly speaking, swords were generally worn by Officers in the Third Reich. Also worn by NCO's in the Heer and SS.
Neat stuff and terrific thread! Here are a few photos from my private collection, including an original era photo of NSFK Korpsfuhrer Friedrich Christiansen wearing this dagger.
A large framed photo from my collection.
