here is some pics iT SAYS P.D. LUNESCHLOSS SOLINGEN ON IT , IT HAS A CROWN SYMBOL WITH A W 06 ON ITS SPINE, AND HAS WHAT I BELIEVE IS A SERIAL NUMBER ON ITHE BAYONET (70.R.3.4) AND ON THE SHEATH (70.R.3.13) I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY UNCOMMON BAYONET i thought maybe it was a German Model 1898 N/A Neuer Art Mauser but i am not a collector and have not been able to find one with a sawback. it is 25 1/2 inches long. It is one of many bayonets I found in my dads house since his passing any info would be appreciated. thanks in advance Ron

You have made a correct identification - it should have mS - mit Sage - with saw at the end of the description.

The research I have seen suggests that approximately 6% of German bayonets were saw variants.

Inevitably these are rarer than the non saw backed versions.

On the other side of the rarity argument is the fact that the s98 was a poor bayonet - too long, too easily bent and an inadequate cutting edge and consequently production contracts were stopped within a month of the outbreak of the First World War. The bayonets would have been replaced in front line service.

The marking is for the 70th Infantry Regiment - 8. Rheinisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.70 which was based at Saarbrücken.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Regards

    Richie

Called the quillback......I believe? I am assuming WW1. Looks to be in good shape.
    That is a keeper.

Richie is correct, this name a quilback piece is wrong as the quilback is on the SG98non sawback pieces. Certainly a great piece, with higher value through the matching numbers and good condition, but certainly not rare. The piece was accepted in 1906 so is a prewar piece.
