    Hi Phil,

    IMO a nice Original Eick.
    I cant see if the Eagle is the Original one from Eickhorn with the rounded headshape, your pics arent good enough to Judge.

    Regards,

    I agree, a nice original.
    If the eagle is not original (looks ok but as Gerrit says you can't be sure from these pics) and you look closely there should be some sign that the eagle has been interferred with because to replace it would be very difficult, it would likely need to be glued, without removing the grips which are of course rivetted.

    I really like these earliest type that retain the ability to be fitted to a rifle (the slot for the bayonet lug was usually filled with a piece of red felt) although that was never the intention (these were really a kind of "badge of office" like an officers sword). Sometimes Polizei bayonets are found with many little indentations around the back of the pommel. These are known as "tap tap" marks and they result from the habit of using the bayonet to "tap" in nails when puting up orders / posters etc. As such these are good indicators of originality, very difficult to fake if you know what they look like!

    I also think the frog might be correct as the Rural Polizei used brown leather equipment and uniform facings. Your bayonet is marked for Cologne (Köln) and there may have been rural stations included in that "Polizei Direktion" but I am not sure.

    Here are a couple of pics of my P.D. Lüneschloss marked for Düsseldorf to compare;

    The portepee on mine is in very good condition and the frog is so mint that I am not 100% convinced of originality but apart from the condition I couldn't fault it!

    I hope this helps

    Regards

    Mark

    Thanks guys for your input. Mark, I really appreciate you identifying the area it came from. I will post close ups of the eagle a little later along with some photos of the frog. The frog seemed to be a little large for the scabbard compared to another set I own. It would be great if it was an original set.

    Some nice police bayonets here frog I believe is for the GEW98 so called Butcher blade. Police often carried the "Butcher s98 also" so it makes sense as I have seen police dress bayonets in the larger frogs. That one could be Weimar or WW2 produced piece as opposed to WW1 buff rough leather. timothy

    I would say that the frog is for a Red Cross hewer.
