    Things in the present cannot always be a guide to what happened in the past.

    Elsewhere in the SS thread we have a thread on the process of how the 2d form of SS cap badge
    came about, and it is a set of documents well worth reading.

    Generally in the cap threads and SS threads, we have assembled many, many primary documents which speak to this general issue and what the have to say is very revealing.
