REICHSTAG Bronze Eagle
Hi I have just purchased this eagle by a collector/dealer who told me its the real thing but i have just discovered that the SS Flag he was going to sell me is a fake .. The Eagle is 42cm wide Bronze Can you please have a look see what you think.. I might be able to return it if its not to late....Many Thanks

Kradman is right.....I've seen a lot of post war-made versions but I'm no expert on these...but if it is what they say it is I'd suggest you could tell by the sales price...surely it must be thousands and thousands of dollars/pounds? The flag episode either suggests the dealer is weak re cloth so hope he's an eagle guy...or perhaps suggests something else......I know what I do when a so-called expert tries to sell me something wrong......

Very rough casting on the front side. Acceptable on a cast iron fire grating perhaps, but not on a state symbol attached to a wall. Is it even solid bronze?
Yes its a bit rough It looks like it is defiantly a fake.. Thank you all for your help.. Going to send message to the collector/dealer get my money back now.. It wasnt cheap....

Even if there were a hundred "liberated" originally surely specialists in this field will have a feel for when one hits the market....I'd've thought that would have been a massive talking point / big deal in that field.....we're not talking about a German helmet of which there were tens of thousands.... My guess is that those people with them will know precisely which wall and room it came from...and have pics to prove it...and I'd doubt very much that there'll still be some "out there" in attics..... but what do I know...

I have seen some over the years at auctions but if they are real or not I dont know Ratisbons sold a real one for 4000 Euro and Bristol Auctions sold one for about £1100
Really?....thank you.......I dunno...but that sounds real cheap....REAL CHEAP for what must be a special part of a special building from a special time......but as I say, it ain't my field
Good luck with your ongoing search and collecting...whatever happens, don't give up (if you can afford it)...most of us have questionable bits in our collection.....we just don't like to think about 'em!
I would have to agree very strongly with Composite about the significance of this particular Eagle and if it was an original Reichstag Piece.. I would most assuredly be asking the seller for more information but there is also this old adage...
"Buy the item and not the story".... So many times dealers will embellish and add to an artifact a story to convince the potential buyer that it is unquestionably authentic..
You have to do some investigative work prior to purchasing, for example.. How many of these Eagles did in fact hang on the walls of the Reichstag? And once again as Composite mentioned, it is too bad there is not a list of these Eagles out there....or is there and what are the locations... I highly doubt that there is a list, as most souvenir hunters in 1945 were not thinking that these items 70 years later would be so significant to today's collectors...
The difference between the one you posted and the one pictured in the book appears that the center where the swastika is surrounded by the wreath is hollow whereas the one you picture for sale is solid...
And the Eagle picture in the book has its head facing to the left and the one you posted the eagle head is right facing...
Just some observations about the one for sale... I don't know anything about these Eagles... so I may be way off on my observations...

I hope you can get your money back because this does not have the look of an original. The quality is poor even the swastika looks uneven, such poor workmanship would not be allowed on any TR building.
