Re: Any first hand accounts books recommend?
A Foot Soldier For Patton is one of my favorites ones. I haven't read it since I finished around a year or two ago but it was a very good book.

Re: Any first hand accounts books recommend?
"The forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer. An excellent read, it really puts you in a mud covered, lice infested, tattered German uniform in the frozen wastes of the Eastern front. Cheers,
Dave.

Re: Any first hand accounts books recommend?
I am currently reading Rommel by Desmund Young which may be not a true first account but the Author had interviewed many high ranking german and British officers as well as Frau Rommel and there son Manfred and has included much of there testimony in the book.

Hi D,
Walking away from the third reich is my favourite too!
Here are some more crackers in no particular order!!
Soldat-Reflections of a German soldier by Siegfried Knappe
Through hell for Hitler by Henry Metelmann
Eastern Inferno-The journals of a German Panzerjäger by Mason Kunze
The outermost frontier by Helmut Pabst
At Leningrads gates by William Lubbeck
Heaven & Hell-War diary of a German paratrooper by Martin Pöppel
Adventures in my youth by Armin Scheiderbauer
Condemned to live by Franz Frisch
Grenadiers by Kurt Meyer
Dance of death by Erich Kern
I Survived by Godfrey Lias
I flew for the Führer by Heinz Knoke
The good soldier by Alfred Novotny
Twilight of the Gods by Thorolf Hillblad
Panzer Gunner by Bruno Friesen
SS Panzergrenadier by Hans Schmidt
Those are all of the German first hand account books I have.
My latest book purchase was Normandiefront, D-day to Saint-Lô Through German Eyes, which although not written by one Soldat mainly concentrates on a few men with input from Americans too and is a quality read!
My favourite American book has to be 'Tonight We Die As Men'.
I hope this has helped you?
Cheers
