I have always been fan of this series of photos taken at the British First Army School of Scouting, Observation and Sniping during WW1. These came to my attention after reading Major Hesketh- Prichard's Sniping in France 1914- 18 Pretty effective considering that camouflage was really in its infancy at the time I reckon.
