I don't really care about the value of my collection, it's all about having the history I love in my hand...priceless!

But he'd still willingly swap the lot for "a ton of cash, an amusing clock, and a sackful of French porn......"

If you have been collecting for a long time it is hard not to consider your collection as an investment. I have lots of items that sell for 10 to 100 x what I paid for them. When I do sell or trade something it is usually just to buy something else I want for the collection. I still keep buying but I don't see values going up like in the past.

I have yet to sell or trade anything in my collection, it's never really crossed my mind to as yet. Although I have given away odd items that I don't generally collect but have found their way to me usually gratis, to younger collectors interested in those kind of items in the past.

I collect because I love history and love being able to put my hands on it. If the day comes that I decide to sell off my collection I will be just as happy to break even as I would be to make a profit. When I look at my WWI uniforms or my steel helmets, I think of the men. Period. I think of who wore them, their trials and tribulations, if they survived and what became of them. I don't think about how much I could make by selling the uniform or the helmet, that's not important at the moment. And yes the thrill of the hunt is also a rush But all this collecting as an investment? No.

It's true, that most collectors in the hobby feel that they will "never sell my collection", but when the wolf is at the door and a disaster has suddenly struck, such as emergency need of surgery, an uninsured accident or what have you, it is inevitable that all of the collectors will hear that unthinkable thought drift into their minds of "Well...I could always sell my collection if that's the only way to stave off the calamity that's impending". So, it is, indeed, a hobby that has Value to it also, as well as the history, the pleasure and the like. How many collectors on the forum Here have we heard that were forced to sell because of some terrible tragedy or unexpected need? Sometimes they begin over again, and sometimes they never do again.

    I agree 100%, William!

Unfortunately, I always get the pressure by my family members telling me to sell all the stuff right the way, don't like them in the house, they were from dead people, you're too obsessed.....

I don't know what to respond really.

I have been collecting for a while now, I've got my collections from few different countries around the world: Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, and Shanghai. They all have historical backgrounds (war time, and how and where I got them)....

    Regards,
    Taka

There's really not a whole lot that a person can say to people that are creeped out and made uneasy by your collection items. You can always try reminding them that ALL antiques are, basically, "dead peoples stuff" when they think about it-as well as coin collections, old art works, jewelry, etc. It's pretty much what makes them collectable, that there will never be any more made like them. The values too, are another thing to remind them with. Point out what such an item cost you and what it is worth Now and what it Will be worth years from now. If they feel better about things if they think that you are actually doing it for an investment, then good for them. They need to realize that you are Not collecting because you are an admirer of Nazi's, and war crimes. That you find the truly revolting stuff like Concentration Camp stuff just as disgusting as the next person, but the Military items, for example, are not and should not be viewed in the same light as a can of Zyklon B pellets. The Military items came from regular ordinary People-even Relatives. People that were there because they Had to be. They were Patriotic and defending their Countries. A Private in the field is not equatable to a Gestapo torturer and Einsatzkommando mass executioners. You are collecting stuff from the Good guys-the plain old People, and that's a whole different animal. But you have to be resigned to the fact that there will Always be people that just do not understand and likely never will. If they are unmovable, they will, in all likelihood remain so. They will just have to be left to deal with it in their own ways, but need to know that their comments are not going to change your mind either.

I can only speak for myself, and i can say i have never collected with "investment" in mind.

That is why i can enjoy my few trinkets without wasting time, thinking: ""How-much-is-this-and-that-worth?!""

I do not care about money, people with money often believe they are better than others- it is in the human nature. I have no desire to collect just to brag to others, i collect purely with the historical interest in mind.

I have given away valuable items, i have never regretted such actions. After all- to give makes me more happy than to recieve.
I would very much like to make you happy. Not in the happy ending kind of way though.

This is my main argument to my parents every time I see something, it's funny; my mom tells me to ask my dad about it, not the other way around. He is what I call a city-slicker, he is anti german collecting completely even though he's half german himself. It's hard to talk to him. I buy over at grandparents houses sometimes, and don't bother to tell him(cheaper items). It's hard collecting in my house, but he will give in eventually.
