Falklands Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward dies aged 81.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
Sad news. I think he was the last surviving senior officer to lead the RN into war. His book '100 Days' on the Falklands war, or as it was called, Operation Corporate, is essential reading for anyone who wants to know the real story of the naval element involved, and explains exactly why the Belgrano had to be sunk.
It's worth bearing in mind that under his command the limited naval task force could never win the war on it's own, but it could have lost it in an afternoon. That was the pressure he was under, and he came through it a hero. He had a difficult job and did it superbly well, and for that Great Britain and it's dominions owe him a debt of gratitude to match any wartime commander.
Although retired he still advised the Admiralty top brass on a regular basis, recently commenting "If you are a naval professional, then a navy without an aircraft carrier and the right aircraft on board is comparable to the Swiss navy."
That's telling 'em!

RIP Admiral Sandy Woodward he should have received much higher honours for his command of the Task force but had the admiration of the boys from Down South !

Wondered about Nick and his newsreels. I can remember the Falklands and I'm fairly sure it wasn't on newsreels!
