Any Brits watch 'Birdsong' last night ? The tunneling under the German trenches to lay explosives was scary stuff !

ANYTHING WITH MEL GIBSON IN IT- Brit bashing anti semite scumbag. I could almost forgive him 'Gallipoli' if it wasn't for him insisting the script be changed to a British officer ordering the fatal charge. In truth it was an Australian officer.
To be fair to Gibson, the film actually doesn't show a British officer ordering the charge. The officer portrayed is definitely Australian so even if Gibson did insist on changing the script they didn't listen to him.

The film does imply the British were "drinking tea on the beach" after landing at Suvla Bay at the time the attack was going on, which is certainly unfair and inaccurate, as the British landing was nothing to do with the Battle of the Nek (and took place at a different time) and indeed, British troops did support the Australian attack and took fairly heavy losses (especially 8th Bn, Royal Welsh Fusiliers). The reality is that the reponsibility for the unnecessarily high losses at the Nek rests firmly with the Australian command, and ironically, their poor handling of the situation actually caused British losses. However, I don't know who decided on this portrayal, but I have no evidence it had anything to do with Mel Gibson.

I'm not trying to say Mel Gibson isn't worthy of criticism for many other things, but the Gallipoli script change isn't one of them.
