Stanley Kubrick's 1957 'Paths of glory' is probably one of the best anti war films around. One of my all time favourites is 'Der Untergang' (Downfall). Thankfully a German film and not touched by Hollywood. I like Germans speaking German, English/Americans speaking English, Russians speaking Russian etc etc. It's a shame a lot of folk have a problem with subtitles, to me they add a certain touch of realism to the story.
I always liked that movie.
Kirk Douglas too for that matter.
He is 50 times the actor, that his son will ever be.
'Der Untergang' is outstanding.
Yes, its nice to have the Germans speak German.
None of that 'Valkyrie' nonsense .......and that was not even that horrible Tom Cruise's worst flick.
Both great movies in their own right.
SPR is very well made and quality throughout. I still watch it occasionally and doubt, that Ill ever tire of it.
'Das Boot' is quite simply the epitome of a submarine movie.
U-571 was silly in every way and none will ever compare to 'the original,' which was and is the ultimate submarine movie.
None above it and none beside it.
Movies can either be good or bad depending on what your expectations of them are, I thought "Downfall" was excellent, it was exactly what I thought it would be, a very good dramatisation of the last days in the bunker. I must say, I also enjoyed "U 571" because it was exactly what I thought it would be, over the top Hollywood action adventure with great effects, I wasn't disappointed with either, they were what I thought they would be. For me, I get more disappointed when I think a film is going to be a certain type and my judgement is wrong! I do enjoy most of these films, I reckon the parody of the "downfall" scene with the shaking hand removing the glasses in "Iron Sky" was just great!lol
