We always need to remember that the Sherman was a medium tank vs the Tigers which were heavy tanks. It's hard to make a direct comparison.

That said the Panther was a medium tank and outclassed the Sherman. But with 50,000 Sherman's built versus 6,000 panthers, 1,300 Tigers and 500 Tiger II's, that was the real difference

Having never seen an actual battle damaged tank, I do have one question.

In the movie, when a tank is hit by a another tank's main gun, It appears
to blow a perfectly round , smooth hole through the hull. Did that actually happen?

Yes. What happened inside is totally different
