Correct, it's a late war adaptation for battling fuel shortages. The engine runs on gasses generated from burning wood in the "stowe" attached to the rear of the vehicle. The cumbersome device took a long time to warm up before enough gas was generated to run the engine, so was never intended for use in combat, rather by occupation forces who were way down on the German Army's list of gasoline recipients.
