Apparently, there was an even longer Japanese soldier reported-a Captain Fumio Nakahara who was reputed to be still out there as of April 1980. The investigating team found what they believed to be his hut, but they could not locate Him...

    Astounding devotion to duty !

I also heard or saw somewhere that the meagre kit he used
was whittled away to almost nothing..........

Does this mean he was wearing the same clothes for the 30 years?!?! Pretty fantastic devotion though, I love how they have him teaching survival techniques to children! pretty cool stuff!

Yeah, he pretty much used the same clothes for 30 years. In the copy of the book I have it shows how some of the items were adapted/ mended.

When Onoda turned over his weapons, he gave them his sword, some hand grenades and his rifle with 500 rounds of ammunition-all in good working order.
