Default How to frame an object with depth....for Dmaxsu99

First step is to choose the object to frame, and the frame itself. The frame should be deep enough to accommodate your object plus thickness of mat package.

Second cut your top mat to size....4x8 in this instance.

Then draw out and cut out your opening, in this case 2 inches bigger than object on all sides.

Then cut strips about half inch wide by whatever you need for length. I use old mats, you can use anything for a spacer...even popsicle sticks.

Then glue these strips together, to the DEPTH needed.....using 2 sided tape or glue gun

    O
Then glue finished strips to backside of mat. You can do 2 side, or all 4 sides.

Then cut out back mat and attach to strips. I cut my back mats half inch shorter on all sides. So 4x8 is 3.5x 7.5

Then attach object to back mat, using proper mounting techniques. Then attach back mat to front mat.

Not all the pics loaded in proper sequence, but you should get the idea. If you are using glass to squeeze an object, please put object in Mylar backed with acid proof backing. If your framed object touches the glass, there might be moisture telegraphing. Also try to use acid proof mats, even archival mats for the really good stuff. I also recommend U.V. glass. I even changed all my lightbulbs to led style.

The above glasses case was mounted using magnetic tape.

Remember to account for the thickness of the mounting tape into your total depth measurement.

    Great post.

If anyone is looking for the frame to start this project, I'm a fan of the front opening shadow boxes from Timeless Collectibles
