    Sir Payne-my quote was from a popular song of the 1940s (carried on by HPL2008 in his post)-yes it was called Byzantium before being renamed in honour of Constantine the Great.

    It's funny to think that someone looked at Bohemia one day and said, "You know, Bohemia is just way too complicated. Let's rename it Czechoslovakia!"

    Not to put too fine a point on it, but, err, well, you know... Bohemia was just a part of Czechoslovakia.

    Czechoslovakia was actually a sensible and straightforward designation for the land of the Czechs and Slovaks.

    Given that the new state was formed from Bohemia, Moravia-Silesia, Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia, they might as well have called it Bohmosislovcaruthiania...!
