the insurers are assessing the risk not the just the type of items they are insuring. They look at total value of the risk you are proposing not the fact that one item is worth £350 AND ANOTHER £5. That is the job of the assessor in the event of a claim. As long as you are honest and document your items then a claim should be honoured in theory. Mine have not asked me to list individual items they are only interested if a single item is over a specific amount.

In the end the individual has to insure with who they feel best may meet their claim. Specialist insurance will give you that peace of mind but I bet you the underwriter of the policy may well be the same one as the contents insurer uses !

I doubt a burglar will take my arty cap over the lap top, providing of course they get past the two police dogs that live in the house and the intricate defence system surrounding my jager cap......

I used to use these guys. The premium was about £80 for £20,000 worth of collectables. You make a list of the items and their values to be included in the policy.

I have insured my collection as part of my Household insurance. I have specified 'medal collection', given a current value and sent photographs and a catologue of items.

As my collection is housed in two boxes I antipate the whoe lot would go in a theft or fire not just individual items

In Denmark we do not need bills. For this the purpose photo documentation is used, which also is a better proof that you actually have the items in your possession. Bills you can falsify, which is harder to do with actual items. It have to be clear that the pics are taken in your home. In Denmark there are special rules for collections, meaning your collection will not be covered by your normal insurance. I will advice you to check up on your own insurance company/bank about this.

Thank you so much Lars for this. I actually thought that collections were covered by your normal household insurance. What a wake up call.

In my experience you are correct as regards the underwriter being the same.
I suppose as you say it's down to who you feel comfortable with, but I can't shake the impression that I would rather have a specialist assessor deal with my claim, rather than some person who's job it is to sort out soggy carpets and fire damaged sofas all day, and I have to trust that they are not one and the same person!
Perhaps you can tell I have a very dim view of the insurance industry in general, but hey, that's just me.

Thank you all for the advice, very valuable. Myself and my boyfriemd house our collection in two spare rooms upstairs, both with different locks on them. I agree, if someone did break into the house they would probably go for the easy to get electricals downstairs. However, i do worry that with the increase in these "antique" shows, people are becoming wiser to the fact that these items can be worth a fair bit of money...perhaps a little more than my MP3 and Digital Camera.

I'll try contacting the people who insure the rest of my contents and see if i could increase the cover. All i want is a insurer who will accept an up to date inventory of my items, particularly in photo form (we all know how condition of items effects values), to prove ownership and with current values.

No-one in my area knows i collect so i doubt i could be targeted specifically. When i buy anything i tend to wait until evening to move it into the house.

As Andy i have also worked with this a few years. You will also have to make sure you are not "under insured" ( Underforsikret). Meaning if you have an insurance for 400.000 DKR and valuables for 450.000 or more, the insurance company will not pay you anything! Don't for get they will avoid to pay you at any chance they get. It's a fact.
