Item ID

Hi
I am not sure if it is appropriate to use this forum to ask for help identifying an item that may be German insignia of some sort. I am not a collector - I am trying to identify a piece for a third party without Internet access. If it is OK - which section should I post to?

oops - don't know why I attached it twice - it is metal - probably brass - 18.5 cm wide at widest point and 8.5 cm tall

Certainly not WW2 German. But what it is I don't know, sorry.

Thank you for your welcome and thank you for responding.

Someone has suggested it may be German Police insignia - do you think that is likely or does the lack of swastika rule out Germany or just WWII?

If asked to guess, and it is a guess, I would say possibly Italian?
