BBC News - Last surviving Hiroshima bomb crew member dies

"The last surviving member of the US air crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima has died in Georgia aged 93.

Theodore Van Kirk, also known as "Dutch", was 24 when he became the navigator of the Enola Gay, the aircraft which dropped the bomb.

The attack on Japan on 6 August 1945 killed an estimated 140,000 people.

Van Kirk said he had "no regrets" about the mission and defended its morality, saying it helped to end the Second World War."

I had the honor to meet him as he has been a guest veteran several times at the SOS. Another loss of oral historical information.

I interviewed both Paul and Dutch for a radio program that aired here in Pennsylvania. They were guests at the Reading WWII weekend. Dutch said they were moving the entire 8th Air Force to the Pacific and there wouldn't have been even a mouse that could escape bombing or strafing on the island of Japan. Of course, the atomic campaign is still controversial today but I guess that doesn't matter much when you've been annihilated one way or another. Both men said they would go up in the Enola Gay again if called upon to do so. NH
