Default Late xmas present to me.

Got this one from the bay today, so still to arrive but decent pics from the seller and copies of some of the docs it comes with, a 15 Star medal trio from WWI.

HANKS, John-26965/629837 15th (1st London Welsh) Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. They were part of 113th brigade, 38th Welsh Division and most famously took part in the attacks on Mametz Wood when they took heavy casualties. He went to France 2nd December 1915.

He later served as private #629837 with the 178th labour company of the labour corps after he developed chest problems whilst on active service.

HE MAY HAVE BEEN A RELUCTANT SOLDIER AS WHILE IN TRAINING IN NORTH WALES. AT ST ASAPH IN AUGUST 1915 HE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF MALINGERING AND FINED 14 DAYS PAY AND AWARDED 168 HOURS FIELD PUNISHMENT AND, ON 11 SEPTEMBER HE WAS ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE FOR 6 DAYS AND WAS DEPRIVED OF PAY.

Born and lived at 149 Carfield Street Bethnal Green London.

Your a very lucky man to have a wife that not only appreciates our interest in this hobby.....but also supporting it by giving gifts like this.

Just realized that I have the same grouping of medals as you (and for which you kindly helped me out with when I picked them up a few months back)

Indeed Michael I am very lucky, though I have not yet told her about my latest buy!

I remember your trio, very nice. As regards research I downloaded the war diary for one of mine medals the other day and just added a page from it to the thread on him, which covers the attack in which he and many of his mates were captured/killed, well worth a read.
