Eindhoven, a city nearby where I live, was in 1944 liberated on September 18,
    during Market Garden.
This year it was 70 years ago and some festivities are held these days as a
    token of rememberance.
Yesterday there was a tour with about 350 WWII cars, trucks and other vehicles,
riding the same route as in 1944, but now in two days. Some real WWII old vets
    attended the tour.

The todays newspaper said some 200.000 came and saw the tour. Two images show
the route: one in 1944, the other one in 2014.

Thanks for the posting. As a child back in the 1950's and 60's, many of my parents friends had been in the Para's and fought at Arnhem. I passed close to the bridges while I was a serving soldier back in the early 70's. My lasting memory of the Dutch people was how friendly they were to we British soldiers.

Hello, yes the Dutch still remember and thank British, Canadians and others
they were our liberators. Besides the many vehicles about 1,500 uniformed
men did accompany the route, a special camp was made with the whole
    entourage.
Old vet's were interviewed. A friend of mine, Hennie, did the route on bike
which was a tour de force!
Here a few more images and Hennie with his bike.

    ?

    Default 70 years ago today.

70 years ago today, Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne armada in warfare, started on it's fateful journey into history.

The British 1st Airborne, US 82nd and 101st, supported by the Polish airborne and the British Guards Armoured Division with it's supporting elements, started on this day, on it's way, to capture the bridges up to Arnhem, in an attempt to shorten the war.

I think that the majority, if not all of us, know what happened, and it is not my intention to give a history lesson here.

Suffice to say, RiP to ALL the troops, Allied and Axis along with the Dutch civilians, without whom, IMO, more would not have made it back.

In Memorium. Their name liveth forever!

    Regards etc
