The AK-47 and later AK-74 were/are near prefect assault rifles for conscript/third world armies. Robust and simple and not to much maintenance required even under harsh conditions.
    Point and pull the trigger.
At the end of the day what more do you need in a military bang stick.

I have been lucky enough to fire both designs live on the range. I own an MP44 of course.

The AK47/AKM is a better gun.

    Cheers, Ade.

Apart from being a similar shape the AK/AKM and the STG/MP44 have very little in common, the gas system is similar but the rest of the AK operating system is more like the M1 Garand!...

People see the shape and think they're the same bloody thing, like the AK and the Vz58-designed for the same job but not the same design.

Indeed so they look very similar but the operating systems are poles apart!...

Just to stir the water a bit LOL Mr. AK of course had a look at the STG and the "Kurtz" round for the STG. However he improved the STG design and put his own ideas into the final product, making the AK. IMHO hte STG is the mother of all modern military automatic rifles. I don't like the "assault rifle" term.

The AK/AKM is a sweet shooter
