    I have just finished an increadible book by Alderbert {Albert} Holl,
    called
    "An Infantryman in Stalingrad"
    the thing about this book is that it dated -23rd Sept 1942- to 2 Feb -1942
    He was born 15 Feb 1918 and died 6 June 1982.
    What is facinating is that 3/4 of the book is about an attack on a certain building and then reaching the Volga using Armour to help {along with Artillery etc}
    It is an in your face journal so accurate with maps, and air phtos etc, that you can track him and the Armour day by day, he uses for this most impotant task as a Company Commander 2 STUG Panzers to help in talking the building, it is riveting reading, the briefings, and the sheer struggle with weather, injuries, and building and house to house combat. That he survived as a Stalingrad prisoner is even more impressive when we know few ever made it back to home alive from the Russian POW Camps and Gulags
    I recommend it to all
    It has been translated by Jason D Mark and Neil Page.
    I have just finished another called 5 years 5 Fronts. and am reading the story of a Panzer Gunners war experiences. If anyone wishes more information on these books please reply

    Great book , your countryman Jason has become one of the publishers on the Battle of Stalingrad , if you get the chance get Death of the Leaping Horseman , a fantastic account of the 24th Panzer Divison at Stalingrad,

    Thanks Paul E amd Matt1 ,
    I will write to him at Leaping Horsemen Books to see what he has out, and I will look for the Artilleryman at Stalingrad as well guys.

    Holl's journal was remarkable, I love reading books by thoses who were "baggy arse ' soldiers airmen and sailors.

    Remember the guy who wrote {starting in the 50's and translated then} the Sven Hassell series,? I was reading them in College {year 1 -age 12/13}
    Have you see the Website devoted to him, and the great pics from the period, as well as he and old man ,

    he is probably very dead now ,
    But I did mange to get a letter to him in the late 1980's, and I can say he was a gent, and most of all what he wrote , especially in the earlier books was very true,, He never swore , or the swear words blocked in those early books.
    Later he said it was so bad that he just had to put in how it really was , a fu****g sh***y mess
    Cheers guys

    No need to write to him - this is the Leaping Horseman website where you can order the books that remain available...

    Leaping Horseman Books | Specialising in Stalingrad and Eastern Front Publications

    Death Of A leaping Horseman is now a hard book to get hold of and if found usually costs alot of money. Angriff is another great book from the same publishers - don't be put off by it being a photo history, it is one of the best ones out there.

    Thanks for the URL Link, when books like that come out I will usually try to get them, price of not, {well do my best} I understand how rare these types are now.
    I will look also at what you suggested " Angriff", may thanks, and no may pic of Tanks does not bother me, as I am now only in the last 2 years seriously looking at German and some weird allied Armour, any will help.

    I will post SVEN HASSELL"S pics as well they are interesting by the way wether the stoties atr true of not, the early ones did sound very true or have that ring of truth about them
    Many thanks for the info Hucks 216

    You might also like to get Island Of Fire, also by the Leaping Horseman publishers. I believe it is still available in slightly damaged softcover bot normally another expensive book to find in good condition & hardback. But it is a superb book and well worth reading. It is safe to say that so far all the books that Leaping Horseman has released have been quality books to have on Stalingrad.

    Thanks everyone for the book titles and link. I am looking forward to checking these out. I recently read The Forsaken Army by Heinrich Gerlach. Gerlach fought in Stalingrad and was a POW until 1950 when he was released by the Russians. His book is written in the form of a novel and I found it to be quite good. Cass
