If you know what you're looking at, have done your homework, and are familiar with the market...you can come across decent items, so I wouldn't call it pointless.
As always, "Buyer Beware!"...knowledge is your best tool, and this forum can be a life-saver concerning questionable items...just my opinion, Glenn

I am biased here because I feel that (if ) you do your homework on relics then they can be one of the FEW items on EBay that you can rely on...... only IF you do your homework!! There is recent rust and there is long term corrosion and the two can be readily distinguished.

If you can dig them yourself, that's the BEST - but if you cant ( like us southern hemisphere dwellers ) then buy from a forum member like I have or a seller or Ebay armed with some knowledge - you have a better chance with a relic than any other EBay TR item in my opinion!

Take a look on the forum, there are many here who retrieve relics from battlefields and can prove they've done so. Some of these pieces are sold here on the forum. There are dealers who specialise in battlefield relics and again, can say for sure where a piece came from.

You might find genuine relics on ebay but are you prepared to take the gamble that the helmet you want is actually from Stalingrad or was a repro dug up from the seller's back yard yesterday morning where it had been buried for six months after a soak in cat's urine with a rock salt infusion?

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Exercise keeps a persons body fit!! The same goes with study and research. If you want it bad enough, these are the movements that are necessary, to expand ones mind. Unfortunately what you say Crites1234 is true! There is a flood of fakes out there and there is also a flood of authentic also. If one does not try then they should expect nothing. The WRF here offers the best advice and information more so than most forums,,IMO,, but it would be encourageable for the new collector to study and research on their own,, and lean on the advice of some of our most advanced collectors here,, to back up your findings. Thats called growth!! Most women like muscles on men,, but you cant wish you had muscles to impress,, if you dont work out first!
So Yes!!... It is well worth it and very rewarding Regards Larry

In ebay every amateur gets excited and keeps bidding making the price unreasonably high. No way.
If you know what something worth, you will realize that ebay prices are crazy.

I'm amazed that guy's auctions have not been pulled, knowing ebay and it's policies.

Lightbulb Re: Opinion: Is it even worth buying relics on ebay?

I was - and still am - very sceptical indeed about relic-sellers on e-bay. But some of the Forum members above have posted good sense : I have bought some interesting items at very reasonable cost and I stick to just one or two trusted sellers. The more honest ones tend to photograph each piece from several angles which I find helpful. I have never spent 'silly money' ; let's face it, a 'ground dug' Knights Cross with Swords Oakleaves and Diamonds is going to be a fake as is almost anything marked 'SS' etc.

Do your research and buyer very much beware........
