    A fine actor who will be missed. RIP.

    Let me add just one bit of interesting trivia I found in a recent magazine article summarizing his life and career:

    Otto Sander was actually supposed to play the main role in Das Boot, but he was bound by a long-term stage contract at the time and the theater would not let him out of the engagement for such a long period of shooting.

    Instead, the part of the Kaleu went to Jürgen Prochnow, and Sander got the small (but memorable) role of Thomsen.
