Our grandfathers and fathers and relatives in military service!

Article about: by Spitace41 Looks like he was in the Home Guard? Indeed and must be before he joined the navy. Great pic and a great family history you have (Col) James.

    A good idea.*)

I posted a thread on my grandfather a few years back. For those who are interested and haven't seen it yet:

    https://www.warrelics.eu/forum/germa...ictures-16721/

*) Edit: This thread was split off from another one where Wilhelm Saris had suggested dedicating a thread to the military service of members' fathers and grandfathers, hence my seemingly odd opening. All credit for the idea for this thread goes to Wim Saris.

In volume 4 from the series: Headgear of Hitler's Germany,
last page I included a dedication, starting with my motto:

"Wir sollen auch unser Leben für die Brüder lassen"
in memory of Musketeer Wilhelm Schenk of the Imperial German
    3rd Company, Reserve Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 213.

He was the grandfather I never knew. He loved his fatherland and was
killed by a stray bullett on June 13, 1916 at Wytschaete in Belgium. It
was a quiet day with no action, "Im Westen Nichts Neues".

I was given his name, Wilhelm, and I am proud of it!

Shown my grandfather Wilhelm Schenk, proud as he was! The second
photograph is the cross upon his grave after he was killed with a lot
of information on the legs for the cross.

The second two photographs are from my father: Piet (Petrus) Saris.
He was a medic (hospik) in the Dutch army, years before the start of WWII.

My father is in the front row, fourth from left with the slanting cap. He was
from the 3rd company (medics), room 38 and photographed in 1934.

Note the white enameled collar-patch with red cross, sewn onto his collar.

I hope soon to see more grandfathers and fathers in uniform from all kinds of
services from the USA, Russia, England, Germany or whatever country............
    Come on guys:
    Let's Rock & Roll!

And if you don't have a grandfather or father in uniform, show yourself in your uniform!!

This is me in 1961, during my service in the former Dutch colony of New-Guinea,
serving with the 7th Division Light Anti-Aircraft Artillery, in parade-uniform.

I was an observer on a post for about six and a half months, near the coastline of the
island of Biak, waiting for the Indonesian invasion that was "under steam".
Mid-August 1962 all was over, suddenly. Advised by the US-government the Dutch
government handed over New-Guinea too Indonesia.

Would I have survived the invasion? Probably not, as Indonesia would have been given a
hand by the Russians and the numbers of Dutch there on the Island (about 4,000 or so)
might not have had a chance with what would have come over us (25,000-30,000).

This is me two years ago (2011), wearing my veterans-dress:

Only a few years older, but what the heck do fifty years mean!

Here is my grandfather, William Dotson, in Japan with two of his Air Force buddies, ca. 1960. He lied about his age and joined when he was 17. He was an Air Force Policeman. My grandfather is the guy in the middle.

The other photo is of my great-grandfather, Kermit Dotson. He joined the Merchant Marines during WWII and ended up making a career out of it.

A few photos of my father, before and during the war in Angola.
In the top photo, he is the one aiming with the G3.
