It says "Service for Peace and Freedom" and Bundesrepublik = "Federal Republic"

Sorry...even on the website of the German Army you will find no information about this item.
But I sent an email to the Pressestab der Bundeswehr (= Public Relations Office of the german Army).
When I get the answer I will inform you in this thread.

Thank you very much Harti!! I wonder if this is for the first time the German Army was used for UN Peace Keeping Missions.

Just Checked, the German Army had it's first Peace Keeping Mission in Cambodia in 1992. I think that might be what it is for.

I asked them why this "item" was issued...to whom and how many.

Hello Dean,

today I found the answer from the leadership development and civic education of the German Army in my mailbox.
I'm going to translate it this evening (I hope my english is good enough after all those years ) and will post it not later than tomorrow.
