Not strictly true - there were other fighter sorties on D-Day but most were away from the actual beaches. It is true however that only 2 fighters (Fw-190's) flew over the beach landings, those of Oberstleutnant 'Pips' Priller and his wingman Unteroffizier Heinz Wodarczyk of JG-26 who machine gunned Sword Beach before escaping into cloud.

JG-2 scored a victory over the Orne Estuary while I/JG-2 operated over Caen around midday. JG-2's claims for the day were 3 x P-47, 5 x P-51 (including 4 from 4th FG lost while they were strafing a convoy near Rouen) and 9 x Typhoons while JG-26 made a claim for a single P-51. In total JG-2 & JG-26 flew 121 combat sorties on D-Day - compared to the Allied total of 14,000!
