Question Tools to manage your collection?

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering what tools you use (offline or online) to keep track of all the data for your collection (at least for those of you who have a lot of items to catalog)? Pictures, paperwork, measurements, history, etc.
Would really appreciate some insight here.

    Thanks!

I keep a list in a binder. Each country or section has a separate
title page ('Ordnance', 'Japanese Militaria', 'Knives', etc) and in
the listings, a brief description of each item as well as what
I paid and who it came from. Some pieces require
    a little more detail.

In the past, I tried to document everything in a computer file,
but found it easier and faster to look things up or write
    things down in book form.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

This is a great idea and welcome to the forum. Steve has a nice, simple, system that should work well. Wish I did this from the start, but it's never too late! Thanks for the ideas guys.

I find it easiest for me to use flash drives for information storage and images

I write all my items down in a list, how much I paid, the date I bought the item and who I bought from. I've done this right from the start but I've deleted things from the list as I've sold them so I can focus on things I like to collect, in particular party badges.

I print copies of all items and keep them in a binder. I keep photos of everything on a remote harddrive withthe photos filed into folders such as 'Civil award', 'long Service awards', 'EKs', etc.

When i find time I plan to develop a spreadsheet with every item listed, the date and place of purchase, price paid, relevant details (such as maker, condition, rarity), expected resale value etc. That way, should I drop dead suddenly my wife will be able to dispose of my collection fairly and hopefully avoid the vultures that come swooping in such situations.

I kept a register in my computor at first, with pictures, seller descripton and sellers name/contact info date of purchase and how much I spent. It has started to get a little confusing so I think I am going over to book form as well! Welcome to the forums
