    I've seen lots like this many of these were made in France and Germany as war souvenirs, most of the time they are not in a frame like this very nice

    Thanks was in my Fiancée's grandparent's basement.

    It's a very nice piece, but it could be machine embroidered
    for a 'mass market'. I'd consider it to be Home-front
    rather than Trench art. Other souvenir items similar
    to this were pillow cases and handkerchiefs.........

    Thats what I thought until I took a closer look the fabric is not a clean cut piece it looks like it was torn or crudely cut.

    There was a bit of a 'cottage industry' in France and Belgium with the locals doing this kind of work for the allied troops to make a bit of extra money. They are quite common.

    As stated and a fairly commonly seen type of bring home souvenir, though this is not so common with the US emblem on it.

    Looks to be a commercial piece with origins as already stated - if you find embroidery done on purple silk it usually indicates work done by convalescing soldiers.
