Has anyone seen a piece like this before? Looks to be a piece of embroidered trench art? Embroidered Fabric in frame. Reads "Souvenir of The Great War" IMG_1509.jpgIMG_1510.jpgIMG_1511.jpg

I've seen lots like this many of these were made in France and Germany as war souvenirs, most of the time they are not in a frame like this very nice
Thanks was in my Fiancée's grandparent's basement.
It's a very nice piece, but it could be machine embroidered
for a 'mass market'. I'd consider it to be Home-front
rather than Trench art. Other souvenir items similar
to this were pillow cases and handkerchiefs.........
Regards,
Steve.
Thats what I thought until I took a closer look the fabric is not a clean cut piece it looks like it was torn or crudely cut.
There was a bit of a 'cottage industry' in France and Belgium with the locals doing this kind of work for the allied troops to make a bit of extra money. They are quite common.
Looks to be a commercial piece with origins as already stated - if you find embroidery done on purple silk it usually indicates work done by convalescing soldiers.
Think it has any value?
its listed for sale
