Hi Guys, I had already got a 1 Lire Italian note in my collection given to me by an RAF Veteran some years ago. At the weekend I managed to pick up three more notes for £2 for the lot

Allied military currency was issued to the troops prior to any invasion and came in many different currencies.

hi Ade , interesting items ! who funded these and were they issued as a form of wage , to be spent in the local community ?

Hi Al, these notes were to be used by the troops to buy goods and services in the newly liberated countries. They were part of their wages. The scheme had the backing the of provisional Free Goverments in Exile.

You can find French, Belgian, Dutch, etc versions of these bank notes.

In fact, pre D Day there was a security scare involving these notes when a foolish soldier who had been issed with the French version very stupidly showed the notes to a civilian.

At the weekend I showed these to the Para Vets at the reunion I was attending. They remembered them well and said they were pretty much worthless, due to the exchange rate of the Lire against the Pound.
