John, I am italian and I can tell you that if you visit Rome, Venice or any other big city stormed by tourists during the holidays you still need something like that even today.

I went to Venice when I was 12 years old, we arrived in St. Marks square at about 8.30 in the morning and the coffe was affordable, when the tourist boats arrived the prices shot up and were way beyond our pockets, this was in 1956, so nothing has altered. John.
