Abandoned house find.. TrueTemper machete

Hi guys,
Awhile back a friend and I were hiking around the local lake and we came across an abandoned farmhouse. While exploring the ruin I found this machete in what I would assume was at one time a closet.
The scabbard is made of duck canvas and says U.S. AVERY 1943. The machete is stamped U.S. TRUETEMPER -1945-. The handle is Olive Green plastic (bakelite?) with brass rivets.
It appears to be well used and the edge is still pretty sharp. There is a little surface rust, but it feels pretty solid in hand...a lot better than a new machete.

Personally, I would be tempted to just oil wipe it over with a light machine oil and leave it at that, oh, and dont put it back in the scabbard while the oil is still wet, because it will leach through the canvas and mark it badly.

No, I think I'll leave what little there is on it. I like the patina the rust gives it. The oxidation is very light, so light that I can scrape it off with my fingernail.
